Myasthenia Gravis

Myasthenia Gravis (MG) - also known as the 'Rag Doll Illness' is a severe muscle weakness illness.

Symptoms can include:

  • Drooping eyelids
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Slurred speech
  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing
  • Weakness in the arms and legs
  • Chronic muscle fatigue
  • Difficulty breathing

Ireland & Liverpool Football legend, Ronnie Whelan is patron of the Myasthenia Gravis Association in Ireland. Message from Ronnie:

"I had never heard of Myasthenia Gravis until my eldest daughter was diagnosed with this debilitating disease. It was only when MG touched my immediate family that I found out what it was, so I am really determined now to raise funds and awareness about the disease and help families throughout Ireland."

The MGA's three main priorities as a charity  are:

  1. To provide comfort and support to people diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis
  2. To increase public and medical awareness of the condition
  3. To support medical research projects to find a cure for MG

The MGA believes that there are many people in Ireland suffering from Myasthenia Gravis, who are living without any support at all because their condition has been misdiagnosed or undetected. Health professionals and the wider public need to become better educated about MG, and the Association is currently working to ensure this happens.
